A Deep Dive into Suneeai

Suneeai is the art and science of deep listening. There are considered by the Yogis to be two types of sound in the Universe. They are referred to in the scriptures as Ahad sounds and Anahad sounds. An Ahad sound is a struck sound, a physical wave created by two elements of the phenomenal universe hitting each other. This sound wave must have a physical material to travel through. In the case of earth it is the air. The wave excites the air molecules, which continue to travel outward from the source. Eventually, they may reach the ears of a conscious being whereby the waves complete a transfer through the listening structure of the being from the wave to neural impulses in the brain that will interpret them. These waves can travel through air, water and solids . What ahad sounds cannot do is travel through the vacuum of space.

The second type of sound, Anahad Sound, is literally translated as the "Un-struck Sound Current" of the Universe. It is the infinitely expanding vibration that was present at the beginning of creation and is still sounding and creatively vibrating. Scientists call it cosmic radiation. Christians call it the Word. “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, the Word was God.”

This is the opening line from the Book of John in the Christian bible. To me, it is a perfect statement of Naad Yoga.

What is the “Word” that was spoken about? It is a vibratory frequency of infinite creativity, which began the process of the physical creation. All spiritual paths have a name for it. Yogis call it the Anahat and Sikhs call it Shabd, which means word or sound current. It is also referred to as Naam or name of God. Hindus call it the Brahma Naad, meaning the creative sound current of Brahma, or the creative aspect of God. Sufis call it Sauté e surmad, or the tone that pervades the cosmos. In Zen they have a koan, or type of paradoxical riddle, such as, “If you blot out sense and sound, what do you hear?” or, “What is the sound of one hand clapping?” One cannot help but notice the underlying theme of sound vibration as the origin of the universe. Scientists also discovered that the sound from the Big Bang is still sounding today, and it is creatively expanding all the time. They call it cosmic radiation.

Join Basantdeep Kaur and I for an in-depth workshop to learn about and experience Suneeai. The course will go deeply into both types of sounds, and how to develop ones sensitivity to the subtleties of sound. We will practice expanding our listening abilities from which the benefits are many. We will discover that listening is a complete spiritual path in its own right.
