About Mata Mandir Singh Mata Mandir Singh is an international teacher of Naad Yoga and Kundalini Yoga as well as a pioneer of the chant /mantra genre having recorded over 28 Cd's and cassette tape titles spanning a period of time from 1980's to the present day. He is also the author of the forthcoming book, Naad Yoga The Yoga of sound workbook. Early life: Mata Mandir Singh was born in the city of Bangor Maine U.S.A. In 1952 . He began studying piano at the behest of his parents at the age of 8 . Although playing piano, drums and percussion for many years in school bands he quickly became immersed in the exciting sounds of the '60's when the Beatles, Beach Boys and other British and American rock bands hit the music scene. He quickly became interested in guitar and self taught himself from records and books. Simultaneously he became very interested in the American philosophical schools of thought and began to study the writings of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Merging the interests of philosophy and music. His musical taste then turned very much to the singer/songwriter artists of the time including Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Donovan and Phil Ochs. At 15 he discovered the philosophy of macrobiotics as well as vegetarian cooking and began to experiment with both, while living at home. At the age of 16 he left home and school and wandered the fringes of the American Hippie scene, mostly in rural communities and began to travel and study the practice of Hatha yoga and Zen meditation. At age 18 he was exposed to the teachings of Yogi Bhajan who introduced him to Kundalini Yoga and Naad Yoga. Spiritual and musical Training: Mata Mandir Singh moved into the Ahimsa Ashram of Kundalini Yoga in Washington DC in the early seventies and began to work at the newly opened Golden Temple Restaurant. Study there was three fold. Kundalini Yoga, Naad Yoga, Karma Yoga . Life for most of the denizens of the ashram was based on the famous Golden Temple vegetarian restaurant where he continued his education in yogic cooking, eventually becoming one of the operational managers. Music was fundamental to his life there, where his guitar and vocal skills fit in nicely. Life at Ahimsa was full of intensive yoga courses several times a year with Yoga master Yogi Bhajan. Kirtans, dinners and seminars with other yogis such as Swami Sachitananda, Sant keshvadas were part of the scene. In 1983 he was sent to Amritsar India by Yogi Bhajan, where he studied Gurmukhi intensively (the scriptural language of the Sikhs), Gutka, (a martial art ), Naad Yoga and Sikh kirtan, with various Indian musicians and teachers as well as tabla and several Indian stringed instruments including sitar, sarangi and dilruba. His teachers include, Ustad Munir Khan and Ustad Zamir Ahmed Khan among others. He studied Gutka under Ram Singh of Amritsar and several other Gutka teachers in and around the Punjab region. European Life 1984 to 2007 He then moved to Amsterdam Holland with his wife Sat Nam Kaur. Where they both took over the ownership of the Golden Temple Vegetarian Restaurant They ran the Golden Temple Restaurant for 22 years. During this period they worked as a team , instrumental in founding the International Gutka federation with Nanak Dev Singh Khalsa and ran several Gutka training camps around Europe and the U.K. They also cooked for special guests of Yogi Bhajan for several years at the European Yoga festival in France for several years as well as providing music for the festival. Mata Mandir Singh became a certified Teachers trainer in Kundalini Yoga in the mid 90's and began to teach specialized courses in Naad Yoga and Yogic Philosophy to Teachers Training groups in most of the European countries He was also the featured guest teacher at the Russian, Swedish and Italian Yoga festivals. Recording History: Mata Mandir Singh began recording in the late 1970's and early 1980's with such Cassette titles as “God Loves us when We Sing “ and Love of the Lords Name.”. Later in Europe came such classics as “Toon mera Pita , Ant na sifitee ,Sochai Soch na Hovee, The Yogi and many many more. With the creation of the CD technology his series “The Yoga Of Sound” Naad Yoga Therapy series became a best seller on the Kundalini Yoga circuit . He is now a featured artist on Invincible Records lable with many new CD titles in progress. He continues to teach and do music mantra concerts around North America , Canada and Mexico. |
